A legal separation is chosen over a divorce commonly for religious or insurance reasons. The legal separation process and the decisions and divisions that must be made are the same as divorce, however you receive a decree of legal separation rather than a divorce. A decree of legal separation may be converted into a divorce decree after the expiration of six months.
